The chapel, which was completed in 1999 was built by public subscription on the land of Pangbourne Naval College and also replaced the college chapel which had a commemorative William Morris window installed in a light box in the windowless building. It was not well displayed there and the opportunity was taken to move it into the new chapel. Working with the architects Crispin Wride CJL designed and built three steel frames , shaped to take the principal panels of the window and bolted to stainless steel brackets which were pierced by 12mm stainless rods .In order to form the technically difficult internally-curved L sections a company which produces the steel 'tyres' for railway wheels was used. The sections were then cut to size and welded to straight lengths to form the completed frame. A specially constructed beam above the boat-keel of the ceiling took purpose made fittings and the rods where suspended between them and similar fittings attached to the concrete box surrounding the main entrance. The panels where removed from the old chapel ( which involved working in a space only 18 inches deep ) , cleaned ,repaired and installed in the metal frames - each assembly weighing 100 kg. Scaffold was erected and the panels slid up the metal rods to their chosen height. The panels can now be seen in natural light and appear to float before the south facing window of the chapel where the visitor discovers them only after entering the building and looking along its whole length. |
