This site was occupied from Roman times and has good Roman remains in the grounds on show to the public as is the main house. The house was the Round Head stronghold for both the First and Second battles of Newbury. It is now a hotel however English Heritage were responsible for some of the Restoration work and thus it is open for public access.

No. 1 Front of house, main staircase window under repair from bird damage.

No. 2 Front of house, conservatory. Water ingress and large panels with thin glass subjected to strong south-westerly winds were the main problems with this exposed part of the house. Lead drip sills and regular maintenance have kept the room in good condition.

No. 3 The chapel windows are strikingly elegant, an opaque centre with grapes enamelled in red and yellow with a blue flash contrast.

No. 4 Main staircase.

No. 5 A magnificent panel facing the north courtyard.
